Mercedes-AMG G 63 Problems: What Breaks on the W463 and W463A in the UAE

  • Oct 7, 2026
Quick answer

Mercedes-AMG G 63 problems by generation in the UAE: G 55 AMG (M113K) — central locking and door handles, hinges, differential lock actuators, transfer case, exhaust manifolds, rear AC; G 63 5.5 biturbo (M157, 2012–2018) — valve cover and turbo oil line leaks, coolant leaks at the thermostat and intercooler circuit, collapsed hydraulic engine mounts, 7G-Tronic Plus conductor plate and torque converter, spark plugs every 20,000 km, exhaust flap actuators; G 63 4.0 biturbo (M177, 2018+) — cold-start camshaft-adjuster rattle on early cars, plugs and coils, turbo coolant lines, 9G-Tronic adaptations, AMG Ride Control dampers, MBUX and battery drain; every G — differential lock actuators, front axle bushings and steering damper, brake discs and pads, wheel-speed sensors, rear AC unit. Golden Horse Al Quoz: diagnostics from 100 AED, oil and filters from 200 AED, spark plugs from 100 AED, dampers from 200 AED (excluding 5% VAT).

The G 63 is the AMG we see most in Al Quoz — the 5.5 biturbo W463, the 2018+ W463A with the 4.0 and a steady stream of G 55 Kompressors that refuse to die. A G-Class is a ladder-frame truck with live axles and three locking differentials carrying a racing engine, and in Dubai heat each half has its own list of weak points. Owners who know the list drive their G to 200,000 km; owners who treat it like a sedan meet it on a flatbed.

This is what our workshop actually fixes on the G 63 by generation, with labour prices from our Mercedes-Benz repair prices and the notes of Aleksandr Rodichev, our technical director. It continues our guide to common Mercedes-Benz problems in the UAE; the brand-wide points (AC, airmatic on other models, electronics) are there.

Mercedes-Benz G-Class on the lift in the Golden Horse workshop in Al Quoz, Dubai

G 55 AMG Kompressor (W463, 2004–2011)

Engine M113K 5.4 supercharged V8, 5G-Tronic gearbox. The engine is close to indestructible; the body and the systems around it are twenty years old.

  • Central locking, door handles and hinges. Doors that do not lock from the key, handles that stick, a rear door that sags and needs a lift to close — the W463's age shows here first. Hinge adjustment and handle repairs are an afternoon.
  • Differential lock actuators and switches. Locks that will not engage or will not disengage, a flashing lock light. On cars that never use the locks the actuators seize; cleaning, new seals and exercised locks fix most.
  • Transfer case and axle seals. A whine on the highway and oil on the inside of the wheels; the fluids are usually original. Transfer case oil from 300 AED, differential oil from 300 AED.
  • Exhaust manifolds and supercharger coupler. A tick on cold start is a cracked manifold or a broken stud; a rattle from the supercharger is the coupler. Both are known and planned jobs.
  • 5G-Tronic conductor plate and fluid. Harsh shifts and a gearbox warning; the fluid and the conductor plate before anything else. Gearbox oil change from 350 AED.
  • Rear AC and the blower. The rear unit loses gas and the blower motors wear out; the front AC may be perfect and the rear passengers still hot. AC refill from 200 AED.

G 63 AMG 5.5 biturbo (W463, 2012–2018)

Engine M157 5.5 twin-turbo V8, 7G-Tronic Plus (722.9). The most common G in Dubai and the one with the clearest pattern.

  • Oil leaks: valve covers, turbo oil lines, oil cooler lines. A burning smell after a highway run and oil on the turbo heat shields. The valve cover gaskets harden at 80,000–100,000 km in this heat; the turbo lines follow. Valve cover gasket from 150 AED.
  • Coolant leaks: thermostat housing, intercooler circuit, pump. The M157 runs two cooling circuits; the low-temperature intercooler pump and its hoses fail quietly and the car loses power on a hot day before it loses coolant. Pressure test from 80 AED; coolant change from 80 AED.
  • Collapsed hydraulic engine mounts. A vibration at idle in Drive and a clunk on throttle — the AMG hydraulic mounts give up at 60,000–90,000 km under 760 Nm and 45°C. Replaced in pairs with the gearbox mount checked.
  • 7G-Tronic Plus: conductor plate, torque converter, fluid. Harsh 2–1 shifts when hot, a shudder at 50–70 km/h, a gearbox warning. Fluid and adaptations first, conductor plate second, converter last — in that order and only after a scan. Gearbox oil from 350 AED.
  • Spark plugs and coils every 20,000 km. Misfires under boost are the first sign; the M157 is unforgiving with old plugs. Spark plugs from 100 AED, ignition coil from 100 AED.
  • Exhaust flap actuators and the performance exhaust. A rattle from the back and a flap that stays closed; the vacuum actuators and their lines age in the heat.
  • Brakes. Big discs that warp in traffic and pads that go in 20,000–30,000 km of Dubai driving; a shudder from 120 km/h is the sign. Brake pads from 150 AED per axle, discs from 150 AED, brake fluid with bleeding from 350 AED.
  • Adaptive dampers and front axle. Leaking adaptive dampers (AMG Ride Control), worn front axle bushings and a steering damper that lets the car wander at speed. Damper replacement from 200 AED.

G 63 4.0 biturbo (W463A, 2018+)

Engine M177 4.0 twin-turbo V8 with the turbos in the V, 9G-Tronic (725.0), independent front suspension for the first time. A far better car to drive; the list is shorter and mostly about the engine's heat.

  • Cold-start rattle from the camshaft adjusters (2018–2020 cars). A second or two of chatter on the first start of the day; known on early M177 and M178 engines. We record it, read the adjuster values with XENTRY and look with an endoscope before any decision — engine diagnostics with endoscopy from 500 AED.
  • Spark plugs and coils. The hot V and 585 hp mean plugs every 20,000 km here, not 40,000; misfires under boost and a flashing engine light are the sign. Spark plugs from 100 AED.
  • Turbo coolant and oil lines in the V. Heat soak cooks the lines and seals between the turbos; a coolant smell after parking and a slowly dropping level are the early signs. Pressure test from 80 AED.
  • 9G-Tronic adaptations and fluid. Jerky low-speed shifts and a delayed engagement from Park; adaptation reset and fluid in this heat at 60,000 km, not “lifetime”. Gearbox oil from 350 AED.
  • AMG Ride Control dampers and the front axle. Leaking adaptive dampers, front lower-arm bushings and anti-roll bar links on 22-inch wheels; a “Suspension” message and a knock over the speed bumps of Al Quoz.
  • MBUX, cameras and battery drain. Screens that reboot, a 360 camera that drops out, a battery flat after a week — mostly software, connectors and aftermarket accessories. Electrical diagnostics from 100 AED.
  • Brakes and tyres. 400 mm discs that warp in traffic and 22-inch tyres that wear the inside edge if the alignment is off. Pads from 150 AED, two-axis alignment from 200 AED.
  • Differential locks, still. Three locks are still there, still electric, still seizing when never used. We exercise them at every service.

How to keep a G 63 healthy in Dubai

  1. Oil every 8,000 km and plugs every 20,000 km. Both AMG V8s punish owners who stretch intervals in this heat; a misfire under boost is already late.
  2. Coolant and a pressure test every year, including the intercooler circuit on the M157. Power loss on a hot day is a cooling problem before it is an engine problem.
  3. Gearbox, transfer case and both differentials every 60,000 km. Four fluids, one visit; it is the cheapest insurance a G owner can buy.
  4. Engage every lock once a month on a dirt track or an empty car park, for a hundred metres. Locks that move do not seize.
  5. Brakes and alignment after every set of tyres. 22-inch wheels on a 2.5-tonne truck need a straight alignment print and discs without runout.
  6. Battery test every spring and a look at any aftermarket wiring — half the random warnings on a G are a weak battery or a dash-cam install.

When to book

A rattle on the first start of the day, a burning-oil smell after the highway, a coolant top-up every month, a vibration at idle in Drive, a shudder at 50–70 km/h, a lock light that flashes, a shudder when braking from speed or a rear AC that stays warm: these are the early signs, and early on a G 63 they are a planned job rather than a tow. Send the year, engine and symptom to WhatsApp and our Mercedes expert will reply with a first assessment; diagnostics in Al Quoz takes about an hour. Golden Horse Car Service, Al Quoz Industrial Area 3, Mon–Sat 10:00–20:00; pickup and delivery across Dubai on request. FAQ

Which G 63 generation is the most reliable for Dubai?

A 2016–2018 G 63 5.5 biturbo with its mounts, leaks and plugs done is the sweet spot of the W463; the W463A 4.0 (2018+) is a better car to drive and, from 2020 on, has fewer early-build issues. Any G needs its axle, transfer case and gearbox fluids changed in this heat and its differential locks exercised — we check all three at every service.

Why does my G 63 rattle for a second on a cold start?

On early M177 4.0 biturbo cars (2018–2020) it is usually the camshaft adjusters; on the M157 5.5 it is more often the turbo wastegate actuators or a tired tensioner. We record the noise, read the adjuster values with XENTRY and look with an endoscope before any quote. Engine diagnostics with endoscopy is from 500 AED.

Why do the differential locks on my G-Class not engage?

The lock actuators and their switches stick when the locks are never used, and on older W463s the vacuum and electric parts of the system age. We test each lock on the lift, clean or replace the actuator and change the axle fluids; the fix is far cheaper than a differential.

Why choose Golden Horse for a G 63?
