Half of the SUVs on Sheikh Zayed Road are Land Cruisers, and after the German brands it is the car we see most on the lifts at Golden Horse in Al Quoz 3: 70 Series work trucks and desert hardtops, 100 and 200 Series family cars with 300,000 km, 300 Series still under warranty that come for a second opinion, and every Prado in between. The Land Cruiser is as tough as its reputation — but Dubai heat, sand and the way these cars are used give it a clear list of wear points, and knowing it keeps the bill small.
What We Repair on the Land Cruiser
- Engine — oil leaks at the valve covers and timing cover on the 1UR-FE 4.6 and 2UZ-FE 4.7 V8, timing belt and water pump on the 100 Series (every 150,000 km — it is a belt, not a chain), spark plugs and coils, misfires, the 3.5 twin-turbo of the 300 with its coolant and turbo lines. Engine diagnostics with endoscopy from 500 AED.
- Cooling — plastic radiator end tanks, water pump, fan clutch, thermostat and the heater hoses that crack after years at 45°C; the single most common Land Cruiser failure in Dubai. Pressure test from 80 AED, radiator from 250 AED.
- 4x4 driveline — transfer case and front and rear differential oil (usually original), centre and rear diff locks that seize when never used, front hub and CV boots on the 70 and 100, propshaft joints. Transfer case or differential oil from 300 AED.
- Gearbox — the 5-, 6-, 8- and 10-speed automatics want their "lifetime" fluid changed at 60,000–80,000 km; a shudder or a late shift when hot is the first sign. Gearbox oil from 350 AED.
- Suspension and steering — lower arm bushings, stabiliser links, steering rack ends and the rear link bushings that desert driving kills; KDSS on the 200 and the 300's adaptive dampers. Shock absorbers from 200 AED, arms from 150 AED per pair.
- Brakes — a 2.7-tonne 200 Series warps its front discs in traffic and eats pads; the shudder from 100 km/h is the sign. Pads from 150 AED per axle, discs from 150 AED.
- Air conditioning — front and rear circuits, a rear evaporator that loses gas, a condenser full of sand, blower motors. AC refill from 200 AED.
- Electrics — batteries after two summers, alternators, ABS and wheel-speed sensors, the 300's screens and cameras. Diagnostics from 100 AED.

Desert Use: the Intervals That Matter
A Land Cruiser that goes to the dunes on weekends needs the air filter checked after every trip (sand through a torn filter is an engine), the brakes blown out, the underbody rinsed and the transfer case and differential oils changed every 40,000 km instead of 60,000. A city Land Cruiser needs oil every 8,000–10,000 km, coolant every two years, gearbox fluid every 60,000–80,000 km and the diff locks engaged once a month so they do not seize. Buying a Used Land Cruiser
The 200 Series is the most inspected used car in Al Quoz. Before paying, bring it for a pre-purchase inspection: frame and underbody for off-road damage, engine endoscopy, gearbox and transfer case, pressure test of the cooling system, fault memory of every module, paint thickness. Written report with photos the same day.
