The crust holds heat on the block and the hoses, hides the first drops of a leak, and makes every mechanic's job dirtier and slower. What Engine Bay Cleaning Includes
- Protection first — alternator, fuse box, ECU, exposed connectors, air intake and coil packs are covered; the battery is disconnected where the car requires it.
- Degreasing — a citrus degreaser is worked into the oily areas with brushes: around the valve cover, oil filter housing, power steering pump, the lower part of the bay.
- Dry steam and low-pressure rinse — steam lifts the grease, a low-pressure rinse carries it away; no jet pointed at seals, sensors or the alternator.
- Drying — compressed air through every connector and pocket, towels on the covers, then a short run of the engine to drive off the last moisture.
- Dressing — water-based matt dressing on plastics, rubber and hoses; underside of the bonnet and the slam panel wiped clean.
- Leak check — with the bay clean, the mechanic notes any weeping gasket or hose so you know before it becomes a repair.
Why Not a Pressure Washer at the Petrol Station
Most engine damage after "an engine wash" is water in a connector: a misfire a week later, a battery warning, an airbag light. The second cause is a pressure jet on the alternator or the crank seal. We use steam at low pressure, cover the electronics and dry everything with air — the same engine bay, cleaned without a single warning light. Hybrid and electric cars are done only with dry steam and with the high-voltage area left alone.
